There is a hole in the center of the top for an ornament. Most likely there was a bronz eagle mounted on the top of this clock but the eagle is long gone. Owners removed the ornaments from a lot of the mantel clocks in the early 1900s to make the clocks look a little more modern and so they could fit on book shelves.
